Unveiling our Art-First brand relaunch

Brand Strategy

Website Design + Build

Black Math took a moment to refresh our own brand system to bring our public presence into alignment with how we’ve evolved as a design studio, and to clearly state our guiding principle that shapes how we approach design and technology: Start with Art.

Rather than over-explaining who we are, we focused on building a system that felt unmistakably Black Math. It required walking a fine line: allowing the brand to grow up as we have, without losing the distinct style, flavor, and weirdness that defines us.

Symbolizing a New Beginning

At the center of Black Math’s refreshed brand is the Computer — a kinetic logo designed to evolve as a reflection of the artists who shape it. Each form represents a skill, a discipline, or a perspective inside the studio. It’s endlessly configurable, just like us. The mark captures that movement honestly.

A restrained color spectrum brings life and personality to our predominantly black canvas. We paired it with a typeface from Pangram that feels confident but quirky in the right way.

The pixel icons are a stripped-back extension of the Computer —a secondary graphic language built from the same elemental logic.

Deliberately 2D and retro, they draw from the visual vocabulary of early digital systems, which we find refreshingly honest.

Every element of the Computer has its own sound. Our mnemonic is built on the same belief that runs through everything we make: that the most interesting outcomes come from many different things working in concert.

This sonic branding exercise led to multiple compositions, including custom music for our reel and original songs for social media.

Play with it below.

Evolving into a Design & Technology Studio

Black Math was founded in 2012 as a boutique animation studio. We have since grown into a globally-connected design & technology studio working across identity, content, and creative technology.

We brought these pillars to life through a unified visual language spanning flat 2D icons, dimensional 3D counterparts, and a dynamic opening sequence that introduces each category in motion.

Putting Art First

Through this rebrand, we formalized what has long guided our practice. Start with Art clarifies our stance: creative judgment leads, technology supports.

It is both a declaration of belief and a commitment to how we build in an AI-shaped era. Start with Art now publicly guides how Black Math approaches our work: it is our manifesto and our mindset.

“Art First isn’t decoration. It’s how we make complex ideas legible, memorable, and actionable in the real world.”

— Evan Fellers, Chief Executive Officer

Great ideas come from everywhere

Black Math is a studio of curious creatives, and we believe that small, multidisciplinary teams like ours can shape culture and technology faster than ever before. We know that every perspective matters, because great ideas come from everywhere.

What may be our favorite feature on the new site brings this to life: a shuffle button on our About page that rearranges the team every time you click it, living as a small but fun expression of that belief.

Bringing it All to Life

Every element of the system emerged through experimentation and intuition—some through play, others through refinement. Our Play Reel button is a running carrot. We can’t fully explain why it’s there, only that it felt right. You know it's right, too.

All of this comes together across a new website layered with interactive easter eggs, a shiny reel structured around our core capabilities, and a mix of refreshed and new case studies presented through the lens of the updated system.

We had lots of fun introducing the rebrand on LinkedIn and also on Instagram with a 9-grid takeover, surrounded by a wave of new expressions from merch and gradients to a range of fresh, exploratory ideas from the rebrand.
