Motion Guidelines
Chegg was entering a new phase of growth, with an acquisition expanding the brand beyond its consumer roots. Black Math expanded the parent brand, then built the systems to scale into product, motion, and marketing as one cohesive whole.
Following Chegg’s acquisition of Thinkful, the company faced a strategic decision around how the new business should live within the Chegg ecosystem.
We worked with Chegg’s leadership to explore and visualize different brand paths which resulted in Chegg Skills, a B2B extension designed to speak credibly to a professional audience while remaining connected to its parent brand.
Built around a mosaic, shape-driven language, the system reflects the evolving modern workforce, celebrating adaptability, continuous learning, and professional development.
Once the guidelines were set, we built a scalable creation toolkit that empowered a small, startup-lean team to move quickly, maintain consistency, and scale with confidence across channels.

As Chegg explored a more conversational, AI-driven search experience, Black Math partnered with the internal team to use UX animation to help make intelligence feel understandable and responsive. This work informed a broader motion system for the parent brand, defining how Chegg communicates thinking and intent across products and platforms.
Bold, energetic movement is used at top-of-funnel entry points to attract new users, and more refined, focused motion is found deeper in-product for added clarity and delight. Confidence and humanness are woven throughout.
